RUSS JONES (London)
Friday February 27th Brisbane – Step Inn

‘Hackney Globe Trotter’ Russ Jones returns to Australia for an east-coast ‘global beats’ jaunt in Feb… rocking venues in five cities on his way to his main gig at Womadelaide next month… In each location, he plays alongside the local Uber Lingua crew.

Russ is behind some of London’s most successful clubs including ‘Around the World in 80 Ways’, ‘London Calling’ and ‘No Room for Squares’ in the mid 90’s, and was Artistic Director of legendary jazz venue ‘Blue Note’. Guest deejays included luminaries Gilles Peterson, James Lavelle, Fabio, LTJ Bukem & Norman Jay amongst udders. Jones also played a vital role in setting up the celebrated Brazilian record label ‘Far Out Recordings’.

In the 21st century, Russ has become one of the world’s leading ‘global beats’ DJs. From his seminal club night ‘Future World Funk’ working alongside regular DJ partner Cliffy, he has gone on to compile over 13 compilation CDs including the two globally renowned volumes of ‘Gypsy Beats and Balkan Bangers’, and now follows up with ‘Arriba La Cumbia: The new sounds of cumbia from around the world’.

Always championing new music Russ also had a hand in signing ‘Panjabi MC’ for his world-wide hit single ‘Mundian To Bach Ke’ which lead to the bhangra phenomenon crossing over from the UK Asian underground to many a dance-floor.

What makes a good venue??

I am going to be doing a little research into venues around town.. to try and find out what the deals are like at the moment.. Last time I looked allot of venues where charging you to put on a gig so they can get punters along to spend money at there bar.  Sometimes they wouldnt even have a decent inhouse P.A and wouldnt pay for promotion.  Im not exactly sure what the case is now but theres got too be quite a range,  Im going to make it my next mission to do the ring around and be making some lists in the resource section from the mega fasc to the  community friendly venues..

But I wana know what you think constitutes a good venue?? Does it matter who owns these spaces?  Who is profiting from them.. Are they locally owned or multinationals? Maybe its fair they take the bar but should they pay for promotion and a P.A?

I thinks its important crankthesteza does some research so we can make some informed desisions and maybe put some pressure on the venues…TXTR1TXTR6
