White Rhino is back once again to deliver the cutting edge of club music from across the globe. This time round we are stoked to be hosting the UK’s Jon Convex, better known as one half of production duo Instra:mental and NonPlus+ Records.

Despite the endless onslaught of over polished computer music that pervades the interwebs, Convex has been pushing a grittier, worn down, more muscular analogue sound that rides a sharply contoured electro-swagger drenched in technoid futurism.

Convex has dominated 2011 in both his solo guise, with releases on Martyn’s 3024 label, and Nonplus, and with his production partner Boddika as Instra:mental, who’s debut album Resolution 653 has been blowing minds and tearing apart club systems for the better part of this year.

BRIGHT FUTURE LAUNCH

Spread across two stages, this White Rhino also sees the launch of a new event for the Brisbane scene. While White Rhino will hold it down inside with all of the goodness you know us for, Bright Future will be hosting the outside stage.

Helmed by Jimmy Larcombe & Elroy 4.0, Bright Future offer a fresh take on what is currently happening in Brisbane by providing the only monthly club night projecting a broad spectrum of colourful, contemporary electronic music from the freshest Post-Dubstep, Electronica, Uk House/Funky, Disco, Dubstep, Techno, Hip Hop, Future Beats, R & B, Afro Funk and everything in between. With Elroy and Jimmy at the helm you know it’s going to be the start of something big.

Put 12 March in your calendar for one of the most interesting gigs
this year; Nam Shub of Enki will be joining the legendary Pure Bunk,
‘Godfather of Australian Darkwave’ Browning Mummery, Sky Needle, John
Willsteed, XinO, Tam, Ouija (from Lismore) and Undecisive God (from
Melbourne) to launch the Artefacts Of Australian Experimental Music
…Vol. Ii 1974 – 1983 CD in Brisbane, at the Beetle Bar.

Following a very successful Melbourne launch in late 2010, the
Brisbane show also links an historical and ongoing culture of
experimentation in Australian music permeating differing ‘genre’ and
generations. Most acts will interpret/cover a track from the Artefacts
ii CD live on the night. John Willsteed will speak on the Brisbane
‘underground’ of the era along with Gary Warner’s experimental films
and playing selected material; and Undecisive God (AKA Artefacts
curator Clinton Green) will present pieces composed for guitar and
text concerning the history of Australian experimental music.

MOUNT KIMBIE
SEEKAE
SPATIAL
Toy Balloon
Science Project
Restream
Elroy 4.0
Walrii
Kieron C
Vivandiere
Beads
Arku

Few acts can be legitimately hailed as changing the face of modern electronic music…yet Mount Kimbie have received such widespread praise in the UK, US and Europe from critics and audiences alike for their game changing take on modern bass music that has more in common with hazy, early morning pastoral scenes of the English country side than the dark and murky atmospheres of London’s Dubstep continuum.

This March sees the duo performing live as a 2 piece in the intimate surrounds of Barsoma, supported by a cast of Australia’s and the UK’s finest electronic live acts and dj’s across two stages. Sydney trio SEEKAE, who launch their feverishly anticipated sophomore album +Dome this March will be on hand to heat the place up with their off kilter led heavy dreamspace funk. UK producer, Dj and head honcho of INFRASONIC Records, SPATIAL will be bringing his forward thinking Future Garage sounds all the way from London. Fresh off their splintering Laneway performance, Brisbane quartet TOY BALLOON will be delivering a more focussed and experimental take on their brand of poly rhythmic new wave. Dub explorers SCIENCE PROJECT bring their dance floor oriented take on Ragga, Dubstep and Future Beats, and one man sonic revisionist, RESTREAM will be on hand to deliver his star destroying take on intensely layered electronica. Up and coming local producer and Triple J favourite ELROY 4.0 will be previewing a batch of brand new productions on the lucid and wonky tip while the irrepressible WALRII of Dank Morass will round out the main stage by bringing his unique mixing style and finely sourced selection of futuristic bass sounds that pay homage to the jazz and soul fusionists of old.

Keeping things moving in the courtyard will be seasoned campaigner KIERON C, a world class dj who can equally hold it down with the likes of Greg Wilson and Darshan Jesrani, while VIVANDIERE will be on hand to prove why she is one of the most in demand dj’s in the local underground disco and bass scenes. White Rhino originators ARKU and LONE PARIAH round off the outside stage with their distinct interpretations of retro analogue house, psych disco and Saharan funk.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

MOUNT KIMBIE

Unspoken, or barely even there at all? The duo’s first two EPs – Maybes and Sketch On Glass, both out in 2009 through Hotflush – seemed like explorations of spaces so private that all within earshot were turned instantly into voyeurs. The experience was less like listening to music and more like eavesdropping on the machinations of a lone mind – albeit a lone mind surrounded by and retreating from millions of other minds.

In terms of attitude and approach, Mount Kimbie exist alongside those other auteurs in the vanguard of the post-dubstep diaspora – like Joy Orbison, Actress, Untold and
Ikonika, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos who make up the duo were drawn closer to UK clubland by the bass rearrangements seeping from nights like FWD> and DMZ. And like those other producers, their sound – their electronic response to the dubstep moment – is very much their own: sceneless; untethered from etiquette and genre codes. They float through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores. But when the question comes to place Mount Kimbie’s music physically, we’re forced to return to that earlier question – who – or what – is Mount Kimbie, really?
It’s an interesting statement – in Mount Kimbie’s emotionally murky and ambiguous mix you can hear all the sensations you’d expect such a “crucial” coming-together to
provoke. Relief, first of all: then joy, curiosity, surging confidence and – as well as all that – the memories of the old search and its solitude. Agitated, evasive, enigmatic and wry, Maybes and Sketch On Glass seem like transmissions from that found place, the fluid, moving, living part of a city that gets trapped inside a human along with the artificial light and dirty air.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////

SEEKAE

The band have had an incredibly busy few years supporting the praised debut release, Seekae toured heavily, with the likes of PVT, Broadcast, Cloud Control, Decoder Ring, and Midnight Juggernauts including selling out their own headline nights.

Fusing the 808 and bass heavy club sounds of the new decade and their own familiar brand of electronica, the Sydney three-piece return with their Sophomore release. Paying homage to the sound and textures of Tokyo, Berlin, Chicago and London, +Dome blends live instrumentation with electronics and samples collected over two years of performing, touring and writing.
It’s percussive, loud and exciting at times – reserved and laid back at others, but every track oozes a warm feeling that could only be described as Seekae. George Nicholas, John Hassell and Alex Cameron take + Dome to the stage with an impressive live show that boasts live drums, guitars, samplers and synthesizers. They are back to break more ground.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////

SPATIAL

Echoes of haunted dancehalls and distant raves in London town..
In late 2008 Spatial subverted the UK bass scene by releasing a limited 10” on his newly christened infrasonics imprint. The expansion of dubstep’s horizon with a technoid garage hybrid combined with the minimal aesthetic of the design and information reticence proved compelling in an age of categorisation and communication overload. The release scored an instant Boomkat single of the week and all but sold out inside two weeks.
Spatial’s subsequent two 10”s were equally well received, allowing him to expand the infrasonics output with a series of split 12”s by other artists that challenged stylistic boundaries. Many reference points have been drawn in reviews of his music but none confidently define a sound that draws on a huge range of influences and continues to morph with each release. The consistencies are UK rave references, bass weight and an increasingly prevalent focus on energy in the material – thus receiving solid support in London, the wider UK and across the globe.
As an in-demand DJ, spatial’s sets traverse a breadth of bass centric styles centered around rawkus energy with brief refrains into deeper, more abstract material that play on tension and release. He’s played a host of underground parties in the UK and Europe whilst making appearances at festivals such as Club Transmediale, Freerotation and Unsound. He recently made his debut appearance in the US tearing up the revered Dubwar party in NYC. Showcase mixes have appeared for FACT magazine, Samurai FM, Wefearsilence, DJ Mag and Unsound with label press from Wire, Resident Advisor, Mixmag, FACT, IDJ, De:Bug and XLR8R.

Dave Norris (Dizz1)

Sydney based turntablist and producer Dizz1 has been involved in the music industry for over 10 years, both here and abroad, including 2 years in Japan.

Starting off as a DJ he has worked and performed alongside the world’s best such as Grand Master Flash, Jam Master Jay (RIP), Jazzy Jay, D Styles, A-Trak, Plus One, Melo D and JRocc (Beat Junkies) plus many more. One major highlight in his career thus far included being invited by DJ Q-Bert to his hotel room for a 4 hour long 1 on 1 scratch jam.

Presently Dizz1 has been blowing up all over the place. From playing at Sonar 2010, attending the Red Bull Music Academy in Spain and getting air play from Giles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs and Benji B on BBC Radio through to performing alongside the likes of Benga, The Bug, Starkey, Stereotyp, N-Type and Loefah as well as having his track ‘Konotakosuke Yaro’ feature on the highly anticipated Beat Dimensions 2 compilation on Rush Hour.

He has collaborated in the studio with Om’Mas Keith (Sa-Ra Creative Partners), Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313) and Steve Spacek (Africa Hitech) and Stereotyp (Crunchtime Records) as well as forming a new live project with DJ Dexter called ‘Curse The Machines’.

In November 2009 Dizz1’s debut EP ‘3rd Time Lucky’ was released through the highly renowned Dutch label Kindred Spirits as part of their ‘Nod Navigators’ series.

With a his debut solo album due to drop early 2011 keep an eye out for this man from the land down under!

Tigermoth

Tigermoth recently returned from having a new album mastered in LA by Dave Cooley + supporting DJ Krush + Dizz1 in Sydney.
Influenced by Hip-Hop, Jazz, reggae, tribal beats, soundtracks and Asian/indigenous sounds, Tigermoth’s beats are as much an aural journey as they are a head nodding experience. His DJ sets are a mixture of intense/obscure beats, surprise interludes, performed with understated, abstract turntabilism/live sample manipulation/fx additions.

Dj Butcher

Dj Butcher made his first beat at the ripe young age of 13 years old on his parents computer, with a musical upbringing and strong local hip-hop influences, it was only a matter of time before he took on a lifestyle/career in producing music. After completing several (never to be spoken of again) albums throughout his earlier teen years, he acquired a set of turntables at the age of 18 and started studying turntablism. Five years later he has had the pleasure of working with world-famous emcee’s such as Suffa Mc (Hilltop Hoods), Trials (Funkoars), Rakaa Iriscience (Dilated Peoples), Kool Keith (US) & Rhyme Asylum (UK), which only added onto his already impressive local production credentials. Now the co-director/founder of local hip-hop label Born Fresh Records, the maturing of his boom-bap style production has lead down many paths; funk, soul, electro and dubstep to name a few. Progression is the future for Dj Butcher and no one knows what or how the next project is going to sound.

Killbot Kindergarten

Killbot Kindergarten are electro folks. Two soul children with a glass-bottomed boat and pentatonic sails. MicroKORGs and mellow chords; hearts in Brisbane, ears abroad.

A retro-futurist collaboration of neo soul tones draped over unashamedly
binary bones, Youka Snell and Adam Sait’s project has graduated music
college and arrived back at a pre-school for pandas bearing jet packs. Like a soy chai latte in a styrofoam cup, the result is both organic and plastic. You won’t recognise the sound on your lips at first, but after a few sips, you’ll never go to Starbucks again.

It’s underwater love music, the kind the late-nighters on Neptune are probably listening to right now; but it started in the parlour, in West End. Dornoch Terrace to be precise – about as far from London as it’s possible to get on this planet. And while they’re the polar opposite of Gilbert and Sullivan, elements of Killbot Kindergarten’s sound could have come direct from the overture of an oriental Damon Albarn opera.

Lovers of digital neo soul should be on notice. There are two new headmasters in town and school is never going to sound the same again.
