Welcome to the 3rd installment of the most irregular podcast..
This time Uberdog is on the mix! I met him at Glade festival this year (Overkill stage in reality as I spent all my time there!), you can check the awesome pictures from it by the same man there : Overkill @ Glade Festival 2011 I requested this mix after a demonstration of his selecter skills at an ‘afterparty youtube battle rave’ .. Also knowing you are on the ‘crank’ site you might as well enjoy the spanner’s one that he co-run : Spannered.org Last thing he is on the way to oz, fleeing UK’s atrocious weather, to play at “World Techno Day (Melbourne Chapter) – Beat Around The Bush” this weekend. And my brother in bass JugaJuga is trying is best to bring him to Brisbane sometimes soon.. stay tuned!
Now time to crankthesteza! (i guess some people out there still wonder the meaning, wikipedia article anyone?)

NONGAMOR: I’m psyched to have Mad EP for our second installment of CrankCast! My first question for him was where does his name came from..

MAD EP: It is a derivation of my real name Matt Peters. Some of my close friends call me Matty, and sometimes called me Matty P. So I respelled it for Mad EP.

NONGAMOR: Can you give us a bit of background about yourself and your music?

MAD EP: I started playing cello when I was 8, and studying theory, composition & improvisation when I was 14. I was serious about classical music as a teenager – played several recitals, won some competitions, did a European tour, etc… but always loved other music as well. I was an avid hiphop head since the early 80′s, but also grew up listening to a lot of metal, jazz, folk, ska, etc.

I went to university on a cello scholarship, but before I graduated, I realized I wanted to work in all aspects of the music business, and ended up producing the Chicago Symphony radio broadcasts for a couple years, before going back to university to study sound recording. It was there where I started creating my own music. I had access to all sorts of equipment, and I saw DAWs as the perfect medium to combine all of the influences I had.

NONGAMOR: What does your studio set up look like these days?

MAD EP: I would say it is still pretty simple… I primarily work in Ableton on my laptop (I still have a desktop tower, but it is rather antiquated, I just keep it around for archiving & accessing my early project files). I have several midi controllers, a few microphones, a nice mixer, and some various bits (some outboard noisemakers, various percussion, etc).

For years I only used samples and live instruments – but the past couple years I have been using more and more software synths, as well. I like the freedom to compose my melody & bass lines rather than re-pitching everything when I used samples… but the problem I found, was the more and more I used softsynths, the more ‘clinical’ and almost too clean my sound was… so now I am working on combining the two. Using softsynths… but also using field recordings and other ‘found sounds’ like I used to to prevent it sounding like it was composed purely electronically.

NONGAMOR: What music are you feeling at the moment?

MAD EP: I rarely listen to specific genres… but rather, I follow specific artists. It always changes, but right now I am listening a lot to:

- Slick Dogg
- Akira Kiteshi
- Lloop
- DFRNT
- Billie Holiday
- Mobb Deep
- Beethoven (particularly the 32 piano sonatas)
- Subeena
- Primus
- John Adams
- Cakebuilder

NONGAMOR: Any forthcoming release’s or gig’s you gonna play at?

MAD EP: I just released a new 12″ on Marasm called “Beat Downs & Down Beats”. It features Nongenetic (ShadowHuntaz) & Vandell Harris (Mad/EQ) on vocals as well as some cello by me.

I’ll also be headlining Marasm’s 10th anniversary party on 22 April in Paris.

NONGAMOR: Sorry but due to me being lost in the jungle (no kidding) and far from the interweb’s this post was a bit delayed.. but you can still check out this awesome label
Do you usually perform a live set or dj set?

MAD EP: I am happy to do either, but promoters usually prefer to book me as a live artist. It is fine, but I do love dj’ing. Most of my live dj’ing (besides my Sub.FM show and the guest mixes) I do tend to be house parties.

NONGAMOR: What would be your fav live or dj set you ever listened to?

MAD EP: Hard to say… I have seen some great sets… but it would probably be between Mr. Bungle (live in San Francisco 1996) or Daedelus’ set when we played Brighton, UK together in 2008.

NONGAMOR: Best drink/tune combination?

MAD EP: I don’t know for listening…but I know when I perform, I prefer to have some whiskey with me. The perfect, boot-kickin’ combination!

NONGAMOR: Thanks for doing this mix for us Matt, wanna drop a line about it?

MAD EP: It is a lot of hiphop, and combines both some of my best known tracks as well as some of my lesser known works in the same genre. However, instead of going all over the place, I wanted to see how far I could stretch within a few similar boundaries. As Igor Stravinsky once said – “Freedom can only come with discipline”.

Now Crankthesteza:

Im happy to have Luke’s anger for our first edition of our new serie of mixes : CrankCast ! I cant resist to use this decription of his sound : “wonkier than a table with three legs and grimier than an army truck!”.

Hi luke, its a pleasure having you on board, how are you ?

All good, mustn’t grumble as they say!

What kind of music are you into at the moment?

All sorts… Got a promo of the new Chrissy Murderbot album ‘women’s studies’, it’s great. Exillon is making some awesome futuristic sounds too… Electronic music seems to be really interesting at the moment, loads of funky synths, which I love! Been listening to lots of old Amiga game music too (clue at the beginning of this mix) for the nostalgia vibes. Discovering a lot of old J Dilla stuff I’d never heard before, that man knows how to use a sampler…

What would be the best live or dj set you ever listenned to?

The best live experienceI think would be George Clinton and P-Funk All Stars at Glastonbury last year (2010), they are real heroes of mine and it was awesome to finally see them live.
Another really good live act I remember is the Shibusashirazu Orchestra, absolutely nuts, look them up on youtube
Best DJ set I dunno… DJ Craze in a tiny basement in Norwich years ago was fun, also saw DJ Noize in the same venue a couple of weeks before who blew me away.. Lots of Jerome Hill sets I’ve had the pleasure of seeing have been up there with the best!

Ive noticed you use nice samples and vocals, what is your favourite sampling ressource?

Charity shop vinyl is my main source… Also like really rubbish sci-fi and b-movies films for vocal snips.

As we are coming to uk and europe this summer we’d love to have your festivals/party recommendation ?

Well, in the UK there is so many festivals nowadays for every taste and desire… Two small UK festivals I’d definately recommend are Secret Garden Party and Shambala Festival. If you are in Europe then the Free Teknivals are fun if you can bear Tekno music for 5+ days, although coming from France you’re probably already well aware of these
If you can get a ticket somehow, the mother of them all has to be Glastonbury in Somerset, nothing else really compares on scale, production, music etc. It’s brilliant.

We’ve also hear some rumors about your possible appearance in some festival here in australia… any word about that?

Well at the moment rumours are exactly that, nothing confirmed as yet…

The perfect drink and tune combination?

Straight Jim Beam, 1 cube of ice and Led Zeppelin

Thanks for doing this mix for us, maybe you would like to drop a line about it?

The mix is just a load of mostly new stuff that I’ve been sent by people, some bits from my record label and a couple of surprises!
