For more than thirty years innovative hip hop performers have been re-using or sampling portions of previously recorded music. What was once known as a ‘borrowed melody’ is now labelled a ‘copyright infringement’.
Copyright Criminals is a new film which examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling and the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money.
Tracing the rise of hip hop from the urban streets of New York to the multibillion-dollar industry it is today Copyright Criminals features legendary hip hop figures such as Public, Enemy, Da La Soul and DJ Spooky.
Friday June 11 will see the 4ZZZ carpark transformed into an outdoor theatre for not just the screening of Copyright Criminals but also the launch of DJ Monkey Marc’s solo album ‘As the Market Crashed’.
Renowned for his work with Combat Wombat Monkey Marc will be treating Brisbane to his unique blend of instrumental hip hop, dub and world flavored beats two days before hitting the stage with the rest of the Combat Wombat crew at the 5th annual 4ZZZ Brain Banana at the Jubilee Hotel.
The evening will kick off at 6pm with a veggie BBQ provided by Espresso Train Catering part of the Nundah Community Enterprise Co-operative and is an All Ages event.
